A collage of images of photos featured in Dona Laurita's The Thin Veil exhibit.

Event: MEET THE ARTIST -The Thin Veil

by Dona Laurita

April 11th from 7-8 pm

  • The Thin Veil is open for viewing Tuesday - Friday from 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. by appointment only at the Naropa University Nalanda Campus located at 6287 Arapahoe Ave, Boulder, Colo. This exhibition runs through April 19, 2024.

Please join Naropa University Art Galleries for an artist talk and to celebrate Dona Laurita's work, now showing in the Cube and Nalanda Galleries, on Thursday, April 11th, from 7:00-8:00 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and light appetizers will be served.

This one-of-a-kind art experience, The Thin Veil, delves into the delicate boundary between life and death, and the profound themes of grief. It's a fusion of text, lighting, and moving visuals that promise to leave a lasting impression. Renowned artist Dona Laurita shares a series of ethereal images in a multimedia presentation that delves into the complex emotions that often accompany a life-altering event. This deeply personal journey was born out of Laurita's own experiences, particularly the loss of her beloved daughter, Julietta.

The exhibit features printed silk, which offers a translucent and ethereal quality. The abstract and vague images on the silk are based on Laurita's personal experiences and provide an opportunity for reflection for those who have experienced the pain of losing a loved one. The portals represented by these images are like windows that represent a significant dynamic of grief for the artist.

As a unique feature of this exhibition, visitors are not mere observers, but active contributors. You're invited to write messages to the other side, beyond the thin veil. Using a typewriter and delicate strips of cloth, you can compose a message that will become a part of The Thin Veil when hung together with others’ messages. This interactive component adds a personal dimension to the exhibition, transforming it into a shared experience of reflection and connection.

Dona Laurita is a professional photographer with over thirty years of experience she specializes in documentary work, deeply meaningful fine art projects, and teaching residencies, channeling her passion for art, community, and education into her practice. Laurita is a recipient of the National Endowment of the Arts grant, among other smaller awards.

November / December 2023 Updates

Betsy TOBIN & Michael GUNST present MOMENT in TIME with music by Jesse Manno

Each scene unfolds as if emerging out of a black and white photograph. What happened before? What happens next? The audience enters a world in which two workers engineer the imagination of the moment. In this realm where black and white meet, theatre artists Betsy Tobin and Michael Gunst tell simple stories with puppets, masks, movement, and imagery. These compassionate glimpses of humanity transpire in a universal language without words. Inspired by real-life situations captured in black and white photographs, this performance paints an evocative portrait of the human condition.

Dolores and Gil have been collecting and supporting my work for many years. I can’t express enough how grateful I am for it and for all that they do towards Latino/Latinx art and artists. Great evidence is their decision to donate part of their collection to the Blanton Museum of Art, where so many more people can discover and enjoy our unique vision.
