Midsummer Night's Dream Shakespeare in the Schools
Art Discipline: Theatre
The Manitou Springs School District applied this year’s CAP award for a residency with the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs (UCCS)- Theatreworks. Manitou Springs School District 14 serves approximately 1500 students from Pre-kindergarten to Grade 12 who resides in the communities of Manitou Springs, Cascade, Green Mountain Falls, Chipita Park, Crystal Park, and Cedar Heights. We serve over 400 “choice” students that come to our district from other locations in El Paso and Teller Counties. We offer a “small town” educational environment and we are driven by “Relationships, Rigor, and Opportunity” as we serve our children and our communities. The Shakespeare in the Schools curriculum marries perfectly with our mission and we have dedicated funding to this partnership for the last three years. This year we asked Theatreworks to fulfill another need our teachers discovered was missing from prior residencies: live performance. The CAP grant this year served 103 students with THREE points of contact with Theatreworks. In addition to the usual 90 min workshops (expanded this year to two hours!) We also took our students to Theatreworks to attend their December professional production of A Christmas Carol. Additionally, Theatreworks also created a 20-minute four person highly engaging summary performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream and performed it on site in our District Auditorium.
