Using Improv to Create Inclusive & Collaborative Classrooms
Presenter: Lainie Hodges, Teaching Artist
Improvisation games and exercises are powerful tools to support the creation of inclusive and collaborative classroom learning environments. While improvisation is typically thought of in terms of wit and comedy, it is actually the ability to create and build with what is available to us. Improvisation games and exercises help to create safe, equitable and inclusive learning environments that lead to the personal and collective growth of participants. As an asset-based tool for learning, improvisation supports the development of the whole child and their social-emotional skills. It provides a platform to experience a range of emotions through play and shows participants that they are not limited in their emotional responses, a key element of social-emotional intelligence. When a class improvises together, they learn how to work and create together, leading to better relationships and more cooperation through personal and group accountability. Skills such as risk-taking, communication, compassion, and resiliency are also reinforced through improvisation training.
