Engaged and Engaging: On-Going Empowerment for Your Teaching Artistry
Presenter: Allison Watrous and Patrick Elkins-Zeglarski, Denver Center for the Performing Arts
This active workshop will give you arts-based activities and strategies for crafting the most out of your teaching artistry. Classroom management, community-building, simple assessment, and easy-to-apply exercises adaptable to any arts content will all be covered with plentiful room for questions, insights, and reflection on best-practices.

Socially Engaged Art in the Modern Classroom
Presenter: JC Futrell, RedLine
In this workshop, we will explore the importance of Socially Engaged Art in the modern classroom through the lens of the working artist and educator. As both a professional artist and educator, I have found Socially Engaged Art to be an immeasurable tool in the classroom. Far too often instructors and artists struggle with relevant lesson plans to address complex issues. The modern classroom is an ever-changing ecosystem and without a defined paradigm to navigate through it, the instructor as the guide may lose an opportunity to lead a class to a higher level of cultural, political and emotional understanding. This workshop will examine the core principles of Socially Engaged Art and take a deeper look into We Still Live, a community-based art project, inspired by Denver artist Thomas Evans. This project is in collaboration with Arts Street@YEA, Thomas Evans, Paul Hamilton, Denver gang prevention programs, and Ancestry.com in order to offer a positive alternative to negative influences by exploring self-identity and cultural heritage through art in youth.
