Math Through Music Theory

Math Through Music Theory

Workshop or Residency for grades 3rd through 5th

This workshop will give students fun hands-on experience discovering how fractions can be expressed as sounds! Written music is broken up into measures, and each measure is assigned a certain number of beats, decided by the time signature of the overall piece of music. When these beats are broken up even further, there are limitless ways to write rhythms, polyrhythms, beats and counterbeats into a single measure of music! Students in this workshop will learn how to read rhythms in music notation, how to play those rhythms by clapping and drumming, and how to write their own rhythms, both in music notation and as mathematic equations. 1-4 workshops.
