Community Windows/Service-Learning
Workshop or Residency for grades 5th through 12th
Students experience a combination of photography, writing, design and publishing, plus serving a public interest.
Students will choose an individual or collective topic, photograph and gather information about that topic, and combine image and word into a book page. When added together, a book will be designed, published, and then provided as the “windows to a community” for people who otherwise can’t have access to their own community (such as residents in a care center).
In the process students learn visualization techniques, interview techniques, how to value publishing, and how to create a published product. Subject matter and location for photography are subject to negotiation to fit within school resources and student vision. Courses culminate in a publication, and could also result in an exhibit of student work.
